Find out how you can maintain your mane without the fuss.
Q: I am a professional woman who frequently travels in and out of Atlanta, leaving me little time for fussy hairstyles. When it comes to hair and makeup, I tend to like the more natural look. Right now, my hair is fairly long and all one length. The color is my natural dark brown. I am interested in making a change to both my haircut and the color, but I have no idea what I would do. I’m open to anything – even coloring my hair. I just don’t want a style that requires too much up-keep. What would you recommend for someone like me? Patricia – Chicago
A: Traveling does make some hairstyles a little more difficult to handle, but there are many options that your stylist can offer that will update your look, but not require too much styling time.
Since your hair is long and all one length, you can have virtually any haircut. Actually, one of the most popular hairstyles today would be a good option for you. Here are the basics of the cut:
- Face-Framing Layers: A short layer is added around the face. It is not blended in.
- Disconnected Crown Layers: The crown is then layered, but the layers do not blend with the rest of the body – this is sometimes called a “disconnected haircut.”
- Fringed Bangs: Fringed or wispy bangs are cut in to finish it off.
If you want to slightly enhance your natural color, I would suggest you add some warm, light brown highlights. They will add some extra sheen and brightness. If you want something more drastic and eye-catching, you might consider some red-violet or red-orange highlights. Either option will really set off a new haircut.
Remember, though, whatever you choose, talk to your stylist first. You want to make sure that the cut compliments your facial features and the color matches your eye and skin color. Good luck. Send me an email with pictures!

What Are Some Low-Maintenance Styles for Busy Professionals?
If you’re always on the go, consider these options:
- Long Bob (Lob): A versatile length that looks polished straight or wavy and requires minimal upkeep.
- Blunt Cut with a Middle Part: Modern and sleek, this style stays manageable for weeks.
- Pixie Cut: A chic, short haircut that’s easy to style with a quick tousle or pomade.
Can Hair Color Be Low Maintenance?
Absolutely! Opt for these techniques to keep touch-ups minimal:
- Balayage Highlights: This freehand technique grows out naturally without a harsh line.
- Gloss Treatments: Add shine and enhance your natural tone without needing frequent touch-ups.
- Root Smudge: A soft blend near the roots ensures your natural color transitions seamlessly with highlights.
How Can I Keep My Hair Healthy While Traveling?
Frequent travel can be tough on your hair. Here’s how to maintain it:
- Hydrate: Use a deep conditioning treatment once a week to combat dryness from airplane air or hotel water.
- Portable Products: Pack a mini dry shampoo and lightweight hair oil for quick touch-ups.
- Protect from Heat: Use a heat protectant spray if you style with hot tools on the road.
