Tape-in hair extensions are thin, pre-taped wefts of hair that are applied in sandwich-like bonds around small sections of your own hair. They are one of the fastest ways to add volume and length, they lie very flat against the head, and because the wefts are thin and lightweight they are especially well suited to fine or thinning hair.

How it works

Thin wefts, sandwiched around your own hair

A thin pre-taped weft is placed under a small section of your natural hair and a second weft is placed on top, sandwiching your hair between the two adhesive panels. The result sits completely flat, with no beads or bonds to feel, and it is quick to fit compared with strand-by-strand methods.

Tape-in is the method we most often recommend for fine or thinning hair. The wefts are lightweight and distribute weight evenly across the panel rather than loading tension onto a single point, so layers blend without visible ridges.

Tape-ins generally work best on straight to wavy textures. Highly textured or very curly hair usually needs extra blending work to keep the panels concealed naturally, which we will discuss honestly at your consultation.

Tape-in gets a reputation for being the easy option, and fitting it well is anything but. Panels placed too high, too close to a parting or without regard for how you actually wear your hair are what make extensions obvious. Mapping placement around your real styling habits is the skill.

David Barron trained at the Vidal Sassoon Academy in London and trains every stylist here to one standard. A seamless finish depends on placement, color match and bond type, and we take all three seriously.

Maintenance

Make your tape-ins last the full cycle

Tape-in is easy to live with, as long as you keep oil and conditioner off the adhesive panels themselves.

  • •Keep conditioner and oils away from the tape panels; adhesive and oil are not friends.
  • •Use sulfate-free shampoo and extension-safe conditioner, and detangle with the right brush.
  • •Dry the panels fully rather than leaving them damp, and avoid heat directly on the tape.
  • •Tie hair loosely for workouts and sleep to keep tension off the panels.
  • •Book move-ups every five to eight weeks. This is the single biggest factor in how good tape-ins look and how well your own hair does.

Not when they are fitted, maintained and removed properly. Damage comes from panels left in too long, at-home removal, or oil and conditioner breaking down the adhesive. Keeping your move-up appointments is the single best thing you can do.
What is the difference between tape-in and fusion extensions?
Tape-in uses pre-taped wefts sandwiched around your hair with no heat, fits quickly and is moved up every five to eight weeks. Fusion bonds individual keratin-tipped strands with heat for a more seamless finish and longer gaps between appointments.
